‘I’m Good (Blue)’ – David Guetta & Bebe Rexha

Are you having the best f*ckin’ night of your life?

I want to say I love this song, and actually, I do…I really do. “I’m Good (Blue)” by David Guetta and Bebe Rexha burst onto the scene last fall after its official release as a single in August of 2022. I first caught it climbing up the charts a couple months later. (Or did I hear it first on the radio? Or was it a Spotify suggestion? I can’t recall now…)

But the bottom line is, I loved it – and still do! But there are a couple good reasons for that; first, it’s pure Euro-flavored dance, and that’s some of my favorite music. But probably more importantly, in my late twenties I loved the song “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” by Eiffel 65, which “I’m Good (Blue)” heavily borrows from (or interpolates, to be more precise).

As such, Eiffel 65’s Jeffrey Jey and Maurizio Lobina were given writing credit on the new track, along with the original’s co-producer, Massimo Gabutti (enjoy those checks, guys!). I’ve long been fascinated with the allure of sampling and interpolating past hits for their recognizable traits. How better to guarantee a hit (or at least something familiar to a listener’s ears) than to give them what they already love all over again, but with a new coat of paint? The original writers aren’t going to complain; they sign off on the new track, receive writing credit, and rake in that royalty revenue. A win-win for all!

For “I’m Good (Blue),” the staccato beats and robotic delivery of the Eiffel 65 original is dispensed with as Guetta delivers a fleshed out, fuller, euphoric rendering of the original synth design, while Rexha’s off-kilter, vocal-fry(ish) and equally euphoric vocal humanizes the track, making it more relatable to the dancefloor (and streaming) audience.

When Rexha belts out those opening lines (I’m good, yeah, I’m feelin’ alright / Baby, I’ma have the best fuckin’ night of my life / And wherever it takes me, I’m down for the ride / Baby, don’t you know I’m good, yeah, I’m feelin’ alright) over that electronic piano lead, and then that deep (deep!) electro bass kicks in, you can’t help but feel it! It’s beauty in simplicity, and it’s why it’s caught on across the world.

It’s interesting seeing more and more songs written in the past becoming hits today thanks to social media, and of course I mean TikTok. “I’m Good (Blue)” was actually written and recorded way back in 2017 (Guetta even performed it at Ultra that year). But thanks to TikTok and its users clipping the track for their videos, it gained traction and became a hit on that platform, forcing the record industry to take notice and officially release it as a single (Rexha re-recorded her vocal for the 2022 release).

For French DJ/super-producer Guetta, it’s his first top-10 entry on the Billboard Hot 100 in seven years (peaking at No. 4) dating back to his dancefloor banger “Hey Mama” (also with Rexha on vocals along with Nicki Minaj). It tied his previous career peak from 11 years back, when “Turn Me On” (again with Minaj) tore roofs off clubs.

“I’m Good (Blue)” resonated well enough with me at the end of 2022 that I changed my original plan and used it as the song to ring in 2023 at the club I djed at for New Year’s Eve. Following the ten-count to the ball drop, Guetta and Rexha didn’t disappoint as the packed dancefloor and fun-loving partiers raised their hands high in the air, proclaiming they’re gonna have the best fuckin’ night of their life, and maybe – just maybe – the best fuckin’ year of their lives, too.
