‘ILY (I Love You Baby)’ – Surf Mesa ft. Emilee

It’s good to see today’s youngsters appreciating the classics.

Inspired in part by Frankie Valli’s 1967 hit “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” 20-year-old Powell Aguirre, an electronic musician from Seattle going by the name of Surf Mesa, has concocted a groovy throwback with “ILY (I Love You baby),” which has found unlikely popularity.

Turns out, anything can gain momentum once Gen Z app TikTok gets a hold of it.

Originally released in November of 2019, Surf Mesa had already been making a name for himself as an electronic remix artist, and when he came across the stylings of vocalist Emilee Flood (apparently known simply as Emilee), he found a track he could sink his electronic chompers into – and the world took notice.

Beginning with that familiar dirty-vinyl record crackle sound, Emilee’s voice comes through like a ’60s school-girl kitten, longing for her man after a trip to the outdoor drive-thru: “I love you, baby / And if it’s quite all right / I need you, baby / To warm these lonely nights,” before the stuttered remix gimmicks kick in, making it danceable enough in that laid back, let’s-get-warmed-up-for-the-party kind of way.

The vintage filtering lends an echoey feel to the proceedings, with Emilee’s voice sounding distant as she pouts for her lover, with the ominous, light guitar strings back-boning the track’s spine. The repeated, stuttering, staccattoed “Buh, buh-buh-buh, Buh, buh-buh-buh” will undoubtedly set off the light bulb inside the dubstep kids’ heads.

So, what’s next for this young upstart? In June of 2020, Surf Mesa produced an official remix for Marshmello and Halsey’s “Be Kind,” lending him deeper street cred in the corporate electronic music world – a place many of us would love to be.
