“We play games of love to avoid the depression…”
Well that doesn’t sound like a fun, summery song, does it? But it works…and apparently, it’s working for many as 24kGoldn‘s “Mood” stormed the charts and peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, thanks in part to a smooth vocal by fellow young rapper Iann Dior.
In the song, the duo essentially trade stories about the toxic, shitty relationships they’re in, wondering why their significant others are always “in a mood.” It’s a theme that resonates because it’s universal. Who hasn’t ever been in a crappy relationship? Who hasn’t dated someone who’s only in love with the idea of being in love? Or married someone who’s simply in love with the idea of marriage?
Drama! Steer clear! You get my meanin’ (and theirs’ too).
But all is not lost! “Mood” is a catchy earworm, and gives the darker subject matter a light, frothy feel. It’s like saying, Hey! This relationship sucks, but that’s life. So let’s have a drink, smile, and continue the party.
Like 24kGoldn himself, “Mood” isn’t easy to categorize, which has helped it win broad appeal. A simple guitar riff provides the backbone, with 24k and Dior rapping over the top of it, beat-breaking to the stuttering trap drums.
Released in July 2020, it wound up one of the year’s so-called “songs of summer,” which is something 2020 could’ve use more of. And as for 24 and Dior…they’re 20 and 21 years old, respectively, and if they think they’re living the rough ride of relationships now, well…they have a long road ahead.
But hey, having a worldwide No. 1 hit should help curate their dating prospects a little…
