It’s electronic and downbeat, so why do I smile when I hear it?
“Gold” by American electro-R&B artist Kiiara quietly climbed the charts after its release in June 2015, and for good reason.
Despite the dark-ish lyrics and tone, there’s a foot tapping aspect to “Gold” that keeps the track light and your feet moving. You don’t really want to grind to it, but you can’t help it when that electro bass and staccato synthesized hi-hat kicks in, a rhythm section so precise that you can’t help but move along with it.
She’s not too happy with whoever she’s dating at the moment, as evidenced by the lyrics:
And if you love me, love me but you never let me go
When the roof was on fire, you never let me know
Say you’re sorry honey, but you never really show
And I could leave the party without ever letting you know
Perhaps she was cheated on? Or maybe he just doesn’t give a rip?
I missed you in the basement
But your brother was a good substitute for you
Ah; it looks like she’ll be fine.
But the standout gimmick of the track — the on that pulled me in on the first listen — is the sampled vocals in the chorus. A patchwork of rhythmic voice, it makes you wonder how she performs it live. The lead single from the EP low kii savage, “Gold” topped out at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100, following her debut single, “Bring Me Back,” which didn’t chart when released independently under her real name, Kiara Saulters, in 2013.
The low kii savage EP peaked at #41 in 2015.
